3D Environments

Here is a brief overlook at the detailed work I've done in laying out a bathroom scene showcasing Novatto products. This is just one of over 120 unique scenes I've designed. Most of them are created from scratch, however, anything that has been kitbashed is iterated significantly for both integrity and tonal alignment.

Simulations

Each of Novatto's products involving waterflow are treated with unique simulations and rigs that match their physical properties. The highlighted portions indicate parts of the rig responsible for either length, spread, velocity, and (for this particular model) movement of the faucet's hose.

3D Generalist Breakdown

My work spans multiple 3D platforms, including Blender, Cinema 4D, and 3ds Max, with hundreds of original models and scenes developed from the ground up. Many of these projects demanded a deep understanding of topology, spatial relationships, and production-ready workflows. As a 3D generalist, I’m comfortable owning the entire pipeline from modeling to final composite.

Role and scope
  • Modeling
  • Texture Mapping
  • Rigging
  • Animating
  • Rendering

Objectives
  • Create accurate product models with only the physical item and spec sheets.
  • Use photography experience and illustrative skills to texture models.
  • Reference product's rotations and inflows for control rigs and simulations.
  • Place products into custom scenes with intentional lighting, settings, and timing for render output.

Audience

The models being shows here are meant to create clean representations of Novatto's products for home-owners, contractors, dealers and future partners.

Approach

Starting with the spec sheets, the model is built out with basic shapes and topology with the intention of making a single mesh for each component. Then, a system of material nodes, photogrammetry, and/or illustration is done to texture the model. A series of ~100 unique scenes were made either through kit-bash or scratch; they're given unique props, lighting, and texture modifications to support the characteristics of the model being showcased.

Visual language
  • Shape: To ensure realism, it was important that any sharp corners were treated with a bevel and that surface imperfections were done neatly and intentionally.
  • Finish Color: All finishes were created through multiple product references to create a median for standardizing materials throughout hundreds of variants.
  • Imagery: Imagery is composited with subtle lens effects, vignettes, and grains to ground 3D scenes and remove any instances of being unnaturally perfect.

Services Delivered

These models at the rate of production I worked at, as the sole designer for Novatto, have done a lot to finalize and increase sales across several different platforms.

  • ~250 unique models, covering about 90% of the store's catalog.
  • 10 partner sites populated with beauty renders, with 8000+ product images added to the content library.
  • 200,000$-500,000$ saved by avoiding costly photo projects and un-streamlined 3D environments, where assets would be dependent on the production studios and not an in-house library.
  • Model & scene access, countless content and marketing potential.

Tools

Blender for modeling, the Cycles render-engine, and some compositing. Adobe Suite for texturing, compositing, and bulk-editing.
